When I started my Executive MBA, I had a clear goal in mind: career advancement. Like many professionals, I saw the program as a way to sharpen my business acumen, expand my network, and position myself for leadership roles. What I hadn’t fully anticipated was just how much it would transform me, not just as a professional, but as a thinker, a leader, and a decision-maker.
Little did I know that this journey would lead me to rethink my leadership style, embrace uncertainty, and discover the power of asking the right questions.
The EMBA wasn’t just about coursework and case studies, it was a crucible that tested my resilience, challenged my assumptions, and reshaped the way I engage with the world. Some lessons came as quiet realizations, others as jarring wake-up calls, but each one left a lasting impact on my personal and professional growth.
Looking back, three pivotal moments stand out. These weren’t the lessons I expected when I enrolled, but they are the ones that truly changed me.
The Leadership Reckoning
It was late afternoon, and our team was stuck. A strategic case analysis had turned into a debate with no resolution in sight. Ideas clashed, frustration simmered, and the pressure of an impending deadline loomed over us.
Determined to move things forward, I stepped in. I outlined a clear plan, broke down the options, and expected the team to align quickly. But instead of agreement, I was met with resistance. One teammate, in particular, held their ground.
Then came the moment that stopped me in my tracks. A teammate, someone I respected deeply, simply said: “You’re solving problems, but you’re not listening.”
It stung. But they were right.
I had been so focused on getting to a solution that I had overlooked the importance of real engagement. I wasn’t leading, I was directing. And in a context full of experienced professionals, that approach wasn’t just ineffective, it was counterproductive.
That was the moment I realized that leadership isn’t about being the loudest voice or having all the answers. It’s about creating space for others to contribute, about facilitating rather than dictating.
From then on, I approached leadership differently. I asked more questions. I listened before offering solutions. I created space for others to challenge ideas, including mine. The impact was immediate. Not only did our team become more effective, but I carried this lesson into my professional life, reshaping the way I lead teams and influence strategy.
The Art of Navigating Uncertainty
Before my EMBA, I thrived in structure. I mapped out projects meticulously, sought clarity in every detail, and prided myself on eliminating ambiguity. Then came the business simulation exercise that shattered my reliance on certainty.
The setup was simple: we were dissecting contemporary issues in business, study cases where in a dynamic market scenario one had to make high-stakes business decisions in real time. But there was a catch: critical data was missing, competitors’ strategies kept shifting, and external variables were constantly changing. It was chaos.
At first, I did what I always did, I tried to map everything out, analyze every possible risk, and find the “right” answer. But the reality was, there wasn’t one. I had stepped into my own Kobayashi Maru, if I may let my nerdiness show. My usual approach, carefully weighing every decision, became a liability. There simply wasn’t enough time for perfection.
Meanwhile, I watched some of my peers adapt in ways I hadn’t considered. They made quick, confident decisions. They adjusted course without hesitation. They weren’t waiting for certainty, they were moving forward despite the ambiguity.
And that’s when it clicked. Leadership isn’t about having all the answers, it’s about making the best decision possible with the information you have and adjusting along the way.
That experience rewired my thinking. Instead of fixating on getting everything “right,” I learned to focus on momentum. I became more comfortable making strategic decisions with limited information, trusting my ability to adapt rather than my ability to control.
This shift didn’t just help me in the EMBA, it changed how I approach high-pressure situations in my career. In today’s fast-changing business landscape, the ability to make decisions in uncertainty isn’t just useful, it’s essential.
The Power of the Right Questions
One of the most transformative moments of my EMBA journey didn’t happen in a case study or a high-pressure project. It happened in a single sentence from a professor.
We were analyzing a company’s failure when he asked: “Are you solving the right problem?”
It was such a simple question. But the silence in the room said it all.
So often, we rush into execution mode, convinced we know what’s wrong. We focus on fixing what’s in front of us rather than stepping back to diagnose the root cause. But that one question: Are you solving the right problem?challenged me to think differently.
From that moment on, I started applying this mindset everywhere. Before jumping into solutions, I forced myself to take a step back. What’s the real issue here? Are we addressing the cause, or just treating the symptoms?
This one shift changed how I approach problem-solving—not just in business, but in life. It made me a more strategic thinker, a sharper decision-maker, and someone who no longer assumes that the first problem I see is the one that needs solving.
Looking back, the most valuable lessons of my EMBA weren’t the ones I expected. I came in seeking technical expertise, and I left with something far greater: an evolved mindset, a redefined leadership approach, and a newfound ability to thrive in uncertainty.
These weren’t lessons I found in textbooks. They happened in the moments that tested me, in the feedback that made me uncomfortable, and in the experiences that forced me to grow.
For anyone considering an EMBA, here’s my advice: The real transformation doesn’t happen in the classroom, it happens in the moments that push you beyond your comfort zone. Be open to them, embrace the discomfort, and trust that the person who emerges on the other side will be stronger, wiser, and more capable than you ever imagined.
